Route instructions

[1] From the car park take the obvious grassy track that strikes east through woodland into Invereshie and Inshriach National Nature Reserve. After 0.65km, bear L onto a path that rises steadily east above the Allt Ruadh. At a fork, keep L and ascend north-east, with the woodland quickly replaced by open hillside. Keep on to a pass separating Creag Mhigeachaidh and Geal Charn (NH875019).

[2] Leave the path for the pathless lower slopes of Geal Charn with a steep climb south-east across heathery ground. When the gradient relents, the summit plateau is reached beside a cairn. A short, gradual climb gains Geal Charn’s 920m/3,018ft top (NH885014) and a fantastic view across Glen Feshie.

[3] A lengthy section of featureless plateau drops south to cross a narrow ravine, before a steady pull south-east reaches the rounded summit of Meall Buidhe (NH892002). After another short descent, a steep rise east leads on to the ridge linking Sgoran Dubh Mor and Sgor Gaoith, from where some remarkable scenery begins to unfold. A path runs along the ridge so follow this north as it rises gradually onto the 1,111m/3,645ft top of Sgoran Dubh Mor (NH905003). The view of Braeriach is outstanding.

[4] Head south along the ridge, in full view of Braeriach, taking the easy climb to gain Sgor Gaoith’s pointed summit (NN903991). Nonetheless, care should be taken as the final push hugs the lip of the sheer cliffs and buttresses that plunge vertically from the summit all the way down into Loch Eanaich. Again the view, which takes in the Northern Corries and the West Highlands, is staggering.

[5] The path now continues south-west across A’ Chailleach but peters out when reaching a col at 1,012m/3,320ft (NN897978). From here, follow a south-west bearing onto the broad, flat summit of Carn Ban Mor (NN895972), marked with a stone shelter. Here the vista extends to Lochnagar.

[6] Return to the col at 1,012m, descend rough, stony ground north-west into a remote glen just east of Coire Ruadh. Mountain hares may well be spotted here. After a short while the incline eases and the ground improves. Eventually a good path drops down to Allt a’ Chrom-alltain (NN883993). Once across, continue to a fork and go R. Keep on around the hillside, crossing Allt Coire na Cloiche then Allt nam Bo back to the outward-bound path. Go straight on and retrace steps back to the start.
