Route instructions

[1] START Leave car park and walk along Fair Green, pass Dyke's End pub, chapel and war memorial. Follow road around, turn R at telephone box, then L on Great Lane, L on byway at fingerpost. Keep forward to swing R. Go over a cross-track into Reach Wood. Fork L, keep forward, turn R at bench, L at cross track. At T-junction, go R to reach lane, Barston Drove.

[2] Turn L. At corner, keep forward along Earthworks Way. Dog roses and poppies dominate most of the route from late May. Keep ahead at a junction and reach a road.

[3] Turn R. Follow the main road through Swaffham Prior. Soon after the Red Lion pub, go L into the churchyard. Here are the last of the Cambridgeshire villages with two churches sharing one site. The first, St Mary's, has a highly unusual First World War memorial window; the second, dedicated to St Cyriac and St Julitta, has a Dutch feel, probably due to the absence of furniture – although it does contain a wheeled bier. Continue through a gate, turn L in front of the cemetery. Veer L under the trees to join a path in the far L corner. Cross a lane and soon go R at fingerpost. Go R at a drive alongside a working windmill. Continue to road (or to see a second windmill, cross and walk a short distance –
although note that this is a private home).

[4] Turn R. Go L at junction; soon L up steps. Swing R between fields. Continue across fields for 2km. Eventually, go L through a hedge, up steps, to the Devil’s Dyke Path (also known as Devil's Ditch, as marked on the OS Explorer map).

[5] Turn L. The following 3.2km of path takes you along the Dyke, a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest, conservation area and a Scheduled Monument. The site is rich in wildflowers, butterflies and birds of many species. At two points – crossing the B1102 and a dismantled railway – you must descend and climb back onto the path. Eventually, descend to join the green in Reach, keep R to return to the car park.
