Route instructions

[1] START From the car park at the end of the mountain lane, cross ladder stile onto a rocky track, which leads north-west towards low crags at Clogwynyreryr. Cross a stile after 600m and fork R on a grassy track leading north to pass the ruined farm at Maeneira. Follow the track as it bends L, through a gate, and continue ahead for 300m.

[2] Cross Afon Dulyn, just below a small dam – there is no footbridge but, if necessary, the top of the dam can be used to cross the youthful river. Immediately, turn L, cross Afon Ddu (again, no footbridge), then cross ladder stile onto open hillside, with small hydropower building on R. Walk west for 740m, cross a small footbridge over Afon Garreg-wen and turn south-west for 250m to cross a metal ladder stile.

[3] Turn R and walk steeply uphill for about 1.7km (no path) with fence on R. Join broad grassy ridge and turn L, uphill, with fence on R. Continue ahead to cross ladder stile and, now with a wall on L, walk to trig point on the rocky summit of Foel-fras.

[4] Turn south-west, still with wall on L, and continue along the well-worn path for 600m to the piles of stones that mark the top of Carnedd Gwenllian. Walk south for just over 1km, over rising ground, to Foel Grach, where a simple stone shelter is nestled just below the summit rocks. Continue south for 500m, following path uphill through rocks, then veer south-southwest, keeping well back from edge of crags, until you reach the plateau and summit cairn of Carnedd Llewelyn.

[5] Retrace route north for 800m and fork R on an indistinct path (be sure to take bearings if it's misty) which leads north-east to contour over grassy slopes for about 750m. Continue around the headwaters of Afon Eigiau, veer south-east on rough path for 500m and continue east, now downhill, to the wide peaty plateau known as Gledrffordd. Some of the ground here can be quite boggy, but dry, gravelly patches enable progress. Walk north-east towards Cefn Tal-llyn Eigiau, where a prominent rocky outcrop marks the start of a new fence – follow this downhill, north-northeast, to meet a wall and continue on, through rough heather, to meet a good track.

[6] Turn R, pass through two gates (with ladder stiles). Follow the track as it bends east, and descends south to join the track back to car park.
