Getting there

Freeman's Quay is a short walk from Durham's railway and bus stations.  There is an adjacent car park at Walkergate, Freeman's Place.

Route instructions

[1] From the road junction outside Freeman's Quay [A], cross the road over to the car park and bear half right along the edge of the car park to the Pennyferry footbridge. Cross the river and turn left along the river bank passing under Millburngate Bridge.

Freeman's Quay is Durham's newly built swimming baths and leisure complex. It is home to the Water Polo Club and the Durham Amateur Swimming Club, England's second oldest. The club celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2011.

[2] At Framwellgate Bridge, pass under the bridge and immediately ascend the stairs on your right to the top of the bridge. Cross the bridge and then turn right down stairs between Bella Pasta and the Carphone warehouse. Take the left fork on the footpath at the bottom of the stairs and ascend up the slope ahead.

Take care as it is a steep slope.

[3] At the top of the slope, turn left through Windy Gap between buildings to reach Palace Green. Turn left towards the Castle, and then follow the road right at the end of the Green.

Durham University is ranked 1st in the British Universities and Colleges Sport league table.

[4] Turn left down cobbled Owengate, and then left again down Saddler Street to reach the Market Square. Bear right in the Market Square, and pass St Nicholas church on your left heading for the Gala theatre on your left ahead.

[5] Turn left into the square between the Gala and Clayport library, descend one set of steps, and then bear right to descend further steps towards the Premier Inn. Turn right at the bottom of the steps and pass the Premier Inn to your starting point.
