Route instructions

[1] From the road junction outside Freeman's Quay, cross the road and follow it with the Premier Inn on your left. Go under the road bridge and bear right into Back Silver Street. Pass through Fowler's Yard and Leonard's Coffee House on your left and after the road has climbed a slope, turn left up steps and continue through a passage to Silver Street. Turn right and descend to the bottom of the hill.

[2] Turn left down steps between the Carphone Warehouse and Bella Pasta, and continue along the riverside footpath, passing the Fulling Mill Museum on your right.

[3] At Prebends bridge, turn right and cross the bridge. At the far end turn right and then bear left and follow a footpath rising through the trees. At the end of the footpath go up the stairs to reach the road.

Take care as it is a steep climb and it might be muddy at some times.

[4] On reaching the road at the top of the slope, turn right and you will have a beautiful view over Durham Cathedral on your right. Then take the signed footpath to the left after 50m. Follow this as it bears right and descends with allotments on the left. At the foot of the slope, turn left on another footpath and follow this as it rises with the allotments on the left and a cemetery on the right.

This way is narrow and can be muddy at some times.

[5] At the road, turn right and go straight across a traffic light controlled junction and follow the pavement as the road bears right, and cross the entrance to Allergate, walking past St. Margaret's Health Care Centre on your right.

[6] Cross the road at a pedestrian crossing, and turn right and follow a side road under the railway viaduct. At the next road junction, cross Flass Street and bear half left up Waddington Street with the grounds of the former County Hospital on your right.

[7] At the end of the road, proceed straight under the Kings Lodge sign, and keep straight ahead with the Lodge car park on your right. Continue on an unpaved path through Flass Vale, passing an information board about the Vale.

Take care as the way might be muddy at some times.

[8] Bear left down a flight of steps at a waymark sign, and at the next footpath junction, continue straight ahead, with the stream on your left hand side.

Louisa Reeve, who graduated in 2006 from Durham University, won a gold medal in the women's double in the World University Rowing Championships in 2006 and rowed for her country in the women's pair and the women's eight at the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008.

[9] Bear right at the top of the Vale, and emerge in Flassburn Road. Cross Springwell Avenue and go on to Fieldhouse Lane. Turn right into Fieldhouse Lane and then next left into the Crescent and follow this to the end.

[10] Turn right and pass the entrance to St Leonard's school, and at the top of North Road, cross the road by the traffic light controlled crossing, and go onto the dual carriageway and turn right alongside it towards the city centre, walking past "The Garden House Inn" on your right.

Three athletes from hockey, rowing and fencing, carried the Olympic Torch through County Durham in June 2012.

[11] At the top of the hill, turn right into the entrance drive to Wharton Park, and climb the hill to the Park car park. Continue straight ahead, passing the benches on the grass and at a path crossing, turn sharp left and descend a steep path with steps to emerge opposite the railway station.

The hill up to Wharton Park is a bit steep and there is no pavement. Please take care when cars are coming.

[12] Cross the road into the station and then turn right down steps and follow the path under the railway lines, and on the far side continue straight ahead on the station access road. Bear left at the road junction to get a magnificent view over Durham City, and after 50 metres, turn left down steps on a footpath marked City Centre. Turn right and cross Highgate footbridge over the road.

[13] Turn left and follow the road to the end and then descend steps to the main road. Cross straight over using the traffic controlled lights, turning left at the other side and then following the footpath round to the right with "The Gates" on your right side.

[14] 5 metres before starting to cross Millburngate bridge over the river Wear, turn right into the adjacent building (Central Thai Restaurant) and descend a short flight of steps. Go straight ahead and descend another flight of steps (sign: Identity & Passport Service Entrance), turning right at the bottom and descending a ramp. Turn right at the end and go down steps to the riverside road. Cross this and turn left along the pavement with the river on your right.

[15] Turn right at the Pennyferry footbridge, and cross it and bear right past the end of the Walkergate car park to your start.

Durham University has a £6.7m sporting facility, which boasts one of only three powered indoor rowing tanks in the country and the only world-class standard fencing specific facility in the UK. The new facilities complement the £5.5m sports centre at the University's Queen's Campus in Stockton, with badminton, basketball, volleyball and netball courts, a dance studio and rowing room.
