Route instructions

[1] The walk begins in the car park of Dipton Community Centre. Leaving the car park take the path past the war memorial and turn right. Walk a short distance until the church is reached.

[2] At the church turn right off the main road taking the public footpath along the track leading to Pontop Hall farm.

[3] Before reaching Pontop Hall farm bear right at the third telegraph pole after the cattle grid and head for the gap in the hedge. When the hedge is reached, head towards the wood keeping to the left of the wooden posts. There is no visible path between the track and the wood, but a public footpath passes over this land and eventually a stile is reached at the edge of the wood.

[4] Climb the stile and walk into the woods following a more distinct path until the path forks at a bridge crossing the Pikewell Burn. Take the left hand fork that goes downhill following the course of Pikewell Burn.

[5] The path is distinct and eventually reaches a crossing path. Turn left and after a short distance when the path forks turn right continuing to head downhill following the course of Pikewell Burn.

[6] After some time that path reaches a bridge that crosses Pont Burn. Just ahead is an info board erected by the Pont Valley Network detailing stones that used to mark land ownership boundaries and can be found along the course of the Pont Burn.

[7] Retrace your steps back over the Pont Burn bridge and after about 20m take the left hand path. This path crosses the Pikewell Burn with a wooden bridge with stepped access at either side and then begins an ascent back up the valley side.

[8] Head uphill and then turn right at the footpath marker.

[9] Continue to follow the path uphill as it winds between the trees until the forest edge is reached. Walk towards the footpath marker indicating to turn left and just to the right of the marker will be found a stile that provides access into the adjacent field.

[10] Head along the left hand field boundary and climb the stile at the 5 bar gate.

[11] Turn right and continue uphill along the track until another stile next to a metal gate is reached. Climb the stile and walk straight uphill to the left of the trees adjacent to the burn. At the top a track is reached turn left towards Colliery farm.

[12] At the farm there is a stile to the left hand side of the grey container. On entering the farm area walk past the farm house and then turn right and climb the stile at the 5 bar gate. The stile was obscured by undergrowth at the time this route was walked and instead the gate was opened to gain access.

[13] Walk uphill through the field keeping the field boundary of the left hand side. There is no defined path but a public footpath does pass in this direction. At the line of trees running east to west the path becomes a more defined track and follows the line of telegraph poles.

[14] Follow the telegraph poles, climbing a number of stiles, to arrive back at the main road in Dipton.

[15] Cross the main road (A692) and turn right. Then turn left into South Meadows.

[16] Opposite the entrance to Delight Court at the base of the security camera tower there is a footpath between the houses. Take this path and follow across a grassed area and then to the front of a terrace of houses.

[17] Turn left and walk uphill to the left of the fence until a prominent crossing path is reached. Turn right.

[18] Follow the path until it becomes Catchwell Road, then continue to follow Catchwell Road until Delight Bank, a B-road, is reached. Cross Delight Bank and continue along the gravelled public footpath directly opposite.

[19] After descending a sharp slope a terrace of houses is reached. Turn right onto Tennyson Gardens at the front of the houses.

[20] Continue walking in the same direction until the main road (A692) is again reached. Cross using the mid-carriageway island to get back to the Community Centre.

Dipton Rover's FC was formed in 2007 and they play in the Consett & District Sunday League 2nd Division. Except football, Dipton offers a wide range of sporting activities in the community centre such as line dancing, Hoola-Hoops exercises, Tai Chi and karate.
