Route instructions

[1] From the war memorial (NN024002), descend the main road through Furnace and cross the bridge over the Leacann Water. Make a left onto a narrow road, follow this uphill and when it sweeps left, keep straight on along a stony track. Head north through scattered woodland. Once through a gate, the path heads through scenic countryside, with fine views of Dun Leacainn’s steep slopes. When the track turns right for South Craleckan (NN025009), keep ahead and follow a rougher path into mixed woodland.

[2] A very attractive section of the walk now continues, in time climbing up steps and out of the woodland. A narrow path travels through a secluded glen, eventually rising to a footbridge (NN036027).

[3] Cross this and go through a gap in a wall, from where the path veers left through lovely birch woodland to reach a vantage point, granting a fantastic view across the glen. A steeper descent down steps and along a path brings you to a junction. Turn left onto a track then, just before the A83, go right and follow a path through two gates and then across a bridge to reach a gate just to the left of Auchindrain Museum (NN028030).

[4] To continue the walk, go through the gate, carefully cross the A83 and go through another gate into a field. An indistinct path runs left to a fence and then follows its course across the field. Beyond another gate, turn left and walk a minor road for half a mile. Just before a wooden road bridge, bear left to cross an old packhorse bridge (NN020027) across Miller’s Falls – named after the mills that used work the river. During the 18th and 19th centuries, this bridge was used by cattle drovers and packhorses transporting charcoal from Loch Awe to Furnace.

[5] Turn left through a gate, drop down past the dramatic waterfall and walk along a path beside the Leacann Water through beech, oak and birch woodland. Eventually it drops down and veers right away from the river. A fenced path then crosses a low wall, with the path turning left and through a gate. Keep straight on across a bridge and continue to a track. To the left stands the fantastic 18th century double-arched bridge that spans the Leacann Water (NN024019).

[6] Do not cross the bridge, but instead turn right and follow a track for 20m, then turn left across a bridge over the Abhainn Dubhan. After a gate, another lovely woodland path continues alongside the Leacann Water. It soon leaves the river behind and meets a track. Take the right fork and follow the track as it sweeps right to a track on the left. Take this and walk through woodland, passing an old gunpowder mill until, after a kilometre, you go through a gate onto a field-edge path (NN020003).

[7] Follow this to its end then, after a gate, turn left. A rough road descends back to the A83. Turn left here to return to Furnace.
