[1] From the Black Lion Hotel car park (SN732667), turn right down the main street. Follow the road sign for Pontrhydgroes and head uphill until you reach the school just outside the village. Go right into the car park and cross the cattle grid, heading down the lane for 20m until it veers left, where you instead continue straight onto the old farm track. Follow this along the bottom of three fields and, as you enter the fourth, head left uphill to the field’s top left-hand corner. Cross the stile and turn right, then turn left after crossing the next one. Follow the track for 30m, then turn right over the next stile. There’s a short climb here going straight uphill to the trig point on Pen y Bannau fort (SN742669), for views of the Mid Wales hills and Cors Caron plain’s nature reserve.

[2] Pass the trig point and continue over the hill eastwards, following the Devil’s Bridge Way markers downhill to a stile. Go over and straight on, following the path east into the woods, then continue onto a track. Where the track eventually bends right, instead go straight on instead into the woodland then a clearing. Join another track here and follow it through a gate, bearing left afterwards to go behind the farmhouse. Follow along the woodland edge, going through another two gates, until you reach a concrete bridge to cross a stream.

[3] After the bridge, follow the track briefly towards the farm but – before reaching it – go diagonally left to head to the side of the buildings. With your back to them and facing eastwards, head up the steep slope. Cross over the gate into open moorland. There are lots of small crags to go between here, so it’s helpful to follow an eastward bearing to SN792667. After a mile you’ll hit upon the Teifi Pools. Head to the dam of Llyn Egnant (SN792667) and go through the gate to follow the path back down through the dramatic valley of the Nant Egnant.

[4] After a mile of following the path through the valley, turn right at the marker post and cross the bridge to eventually join a quiet country lane. Turn right and follow it for just over a mile downhill until you eventually reach St Mary’s Church, around which the road bends left to pass Strata Florida Abbey (SN746656, refreshments available here). From the abbey, head back up to the bend in the road by the church and climb the stile to enter a field. Cross over the wooden bridge and bear left. Follow the gently winding River Teifi toward the village until you reach a lane. Head left here and you will arrive back at the very welcome Black Lion.
